The optical fiber is placed in the ground wire of the overhead high-voltage transmission line to form an optical fiber communication network on the transmission line. This structural form has the dual functions of ground wire and communication, and is generally called OPGW optical cable.

Due to its anti-electromagnetic interference, light weight and other characteristics, the optical fiber can be installed on the top of the transmission line tower without having to consider the optimal mounting position and electromagnetic corrosion. Therefore, OPGW has remarkable features such as higher reliability, superior mechanical performance, and lower cost. This technique is particularly suitable and economical when laying or replacing existing ground wires.

Description of opgw cable: 
The central al-covered steel tube is surrounded by single or double layers of aluminum clad steel wires
(acs) or mix acs wires and aluminum alloy wires. al-covered stainless steel tube design increases
the cross section of al, to reach a better fault current and lightning resistance performance.
Apply to the transmission line which requires small diameter and large fault current.

OPGW optical cable is mainly used on 500KV, 220KV, 110KV voltage level lines. It is mainly used on new lines due to the influence of line power outages and safety.

The applicable characteristics of OPGW are:

(1) The line with high voltage exceeding 110kv has a large gear distance (generally above 250M);

(2) Easy to maintain, easy to solve the problem of line crossing, its mechanical characteristics can meet the large line crossing;

(3) The outer layer of OPGW is metal armor, which has no effect on high voltage electrical corrosion and degradation;

(4) OPGW must be powered off during construction, and the power loss is large, so OPGW should be used in new high-voltage lines above 110kv;

(5) In the performance index of OPGW, the greater the short-circuit current, the more need to use a good conductor as armor, the tensile strength will be reduced accordingly, and in the case of a certain tensile strength, to increase the short-circuit current capacity, only increase The metal cross-sectional area leads to an increase in cable diameter and cable weight, which poses a safety issue for the strength of the line tower.
